Self Employment Tips

Though self employment can be one of the scariest things you can do, it can also be one of the more exciting and profitable moves of your life. You have to make sure you have the right idea or the right business before you move ahead, but there really is nothing like being your own boss. I love being in charge of myself and only having to worry about clients, and there is no supervisor other than myself looking over my shoulder.

Self employment has its downfalls of course. You don’t necessarily have a steady source of income, and you have to take care of your own medical insurance and the like. If you have a spouse with a steady job, they may have insurance you can use anyway, so that won’t be a big deal. Self employment is not for everything though, and on paper, I am not even a good candidate for it. I am doing well so far, but I know that that could change at any time.

You have to be able to police yourself well if you want to make your living through self employment. If you are bad at staying organized and seem to forget important meetings without being reminded, you might not do well. Self employment means you get to be your own boss, but your boss still has to be tough. You have to push yourself to be a success, and some people simply can’t do this. It’s not a failure if you can’t; it just means that you need a more structured environment to work productively. You also have to be able to work through just about anything without anyone there to back you up.

If you are interested in self employment, remember that you will have to take care of everything on your own. If you have a successful business, you may be able to hire someone to work for you, but you should never count on that. Remember that self employment does not work well for everyone, and it is a risk to leave the nine to five world to go out on your own. Make sure you have planned for everything before you give your day job, and make sure you know what you are doing. With every risk comes possible drawbacks. You could stand to make a lot of money with the right idea or job, but you can also lose everything if you are not careful.
