Sexual Harassment In The Workplace
You don’t hear about sexual harassment in the workplace as much as you used to, but it still happens. At one time, these cases made big news, because this type of thing was rather new. It’s not that sexual harassment in the workplace had never happened before; it was just that it was finally being recognized as a problem for both men and women. The problem with dealing with this sort of thing is that there is a very fine line, and many don’t know where that line starts or where it ends.
Sexual harassment in the workplace is mostly a problem for women, but there are men who have to deal with this. I can’t say I have ever had to deal with this myself, as I have been blessed with wonderful working environments in the past. Most companies take a strong stand on this sort of thing, but sexual harassment in the workplace often happens behind closed doors, and those who it happens to don’t always want to talk about it. In many cases, it’s still the victims’ word against the aggressors’ word, and in many times no none knows what to believe.
In some cases, sexual harassment in the workplace is a matter of someone not knowing any better, or perhaps not realizing what they are saying or doing. I know a man who is bumped from job to job, yet he cannot figure out why. I think perhaps he has no idea what he is doing, but I wish someone would clue him in. When I am in his presence, he makes me very uncomfortable with some of the things he says, and some of the jokes he tries to tell. I can only imagine working with him would be very hard.
There are programs companies can use to help teach their workers how to eliminate sexual harassment in the workplace. These programs often point out what is considered harassment, and how to handle situations when they arise. For some people, but certainly not the majority, it is simply a matter of ignorance. For those who know exactly what they are doing, these programs might be good to serve notice that their tactics are not acceptable.
If you have been a victim of sexual harassment in the workplace, you should talk to someone immediately. If you have a Human Relations department at your place of employment, they are the first people you should talk to. If you don’t, talk to your boss if you feel safe doing so, and get your complaint in writing. If you feel nothing is being done, or that you are being ignored, go ahead and contact a lawyer for further advice. Sexual harassment in the workplace is unacceptable, and you should do whatever you need to do to protect yourself.
