Working in a New York advertising agency is one of the most difficult, and potentially one of the most lucrative jobs available. On the one hand, there is plenty of money available for New York marketing. Some of the biggest businesses in the world are there to sell to some of the richest consumers. Advertising in New York is a cash cow, or so it would seem from the outside. The problem is that New York advertising can be a rather difficult affair. It is true that, with the bustling market in New York, you don't need to grab a big market share to consider your campaign a success. Even so, New York consumers are jaded, and the New York businesses have very high standards. Although it is true that you can make a lot of money off of the tourists, this can be a rather hit or miss affair.

New York advertising has no saying power in the minds of tourists. It only works if it catches them while they are in town. They don't really care what other New Yorkers are doing, so you can't attract them to following the herd. At the same time, they are some of the most conformist people in the world, so New York advertising can't really appeal to a rebellious streak either. New York advertisements have to appear sophisticated, and making advertising appear sophisticated to New Yorkers is no small feat.

Nonetheless, New York advertising has a certain thrill that few other fields possess. It is a high-stakes career. Many people burn out very quickly, but a few others go on to make fortunes.
